Er wurde 1900 in der Provinz Cosenza geboren und wanderte schon in jungen Jahren in die Vereinigten Staaten aus, wo er sich im Alter von 8 Jahren in Portland, Oregon, niederlie\u00df. Obwohl sein Vater sowohl Gitarre als auch Mandoline spielte, war Rudy Autodidakt auf Mandoline und Mandocello. 1931 zog er nach San Francisco und fand Arbeit als Musiker beim \u00f6rtlichen Radio. Ab 1941 besa\u00df er einen Laden namens Book Nook in San Francisco, in dem er S\u00fc\u00dfigkeiten und Comics verkaufte und gleichzeitig Musik komponierte. In den 1950er Jahren spielte er mit dem San Francisco Symphony Orchestra unter Enrique Jord\u00e1 ein Konzert von Vivaldi. Erst 1983 ver\u00f6ffentlichte er sein erstes Album, The World of Rudy Cipolla, das von seinem Freund und Mandolinenkollegen David Grisman produziert wurde. Er hat zahlreiche Kompositionen f\u00fcr Mandoline geschrieben, von denen einige Teil der Soundtracks der Filme Capone und Peggy Sue Got Married sind. Kurz nach seinem Tod im Jahr 2000 veranstalteten Grisman und andere befreundete Musiker ein Benefizkonzert f\u00fcr Cipollas Familie im The Freight and Salvage, und die Stadt Cosenza wollte ihn im Rahmen des Festivals Invasioni 2000 mit einem Konzert von Beppe Gambetta, der ihn pers\u00f6nlich kannte, und Carlo Aonzo ehren.
