Er spielt eine 10-saitige Mandoline die speziell f\u00fcr ihn vom Instrumentenbauer Brian Dean entwickelt wurde. Er verwendet auch eine 5-saitige elektrische Mandoline gebaut von Adam Buchwald. Joe Brent hat in verschiedenen Pop-Bands mitgewirkt, aber auch h\u00e4ufig den Mandolinenpart bei Auff\u00fchrungen von zeitgen\u00f6ssischen Kompositionen \u00fcbernommen. Im Jahr 2012 gr\u00fcndete er das improvisierende Kammerensemble &#8222;9 Horses&#8220;, das seine eigenen Kompositionen f\u00fcr ein sich st\u00e4ndig ver\u00e4nderndes improvisierendes Ensemble f\u00fcr neue Musik auff\u00fchrt. Neben ihm selbst bilden Sara Caswell an der Violine und der Hardangerfiedel sowie Andrew Ryan am Bass den Grundstock dieses Trios. 9 Horses haben zwei Alben ver\u00f6ffentlicht, &#8222;Perfectest Herald&#8220; und &#8222;Omegah&#8220;. Interessant ist auch das Album &#8222;An Englishman in New York&#8220; mit Bearbeitungen der Musik von John Dowland, das er 2014 mit Alon Sariel aufgenommen
