Detlef Tewes hat sich von Anfang an f\u00fcr eine Karriere als Mandolinenspieler entschieden. Als Solist, Kammermusiker und Mandolinist in Oper und Konzert spielte er bisher in \u00fcber 2000 Konzerten. Er hat fast alle Orchesterwerke gespielt, in denen die Mandoline besetzt ist, insbesondere hat er auch bei vielen Unrauff\u00fchrungen mitgewirkt. Als Dirigent wirkt er seit 1992 beim Mandolinenorchester Bayer Leverkusen, seit 1998 in der Mandolinen-Konzertgesellschaft Wuppertal, er hat aber auch mehrere andere Orchester dirigiert. Detlef Tewes hat als Bearbeiter und Herausgeber zahlreiche Notenausgaben im Verlag Edition 49 ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Er hat zahlreich Alben ver\u00f6ffentlicht, darunter eine CD mit den Preludes von Raffaele Calace f\u00fcr Mandoline solo und mehrere Alben mit Boris Bagger, Gitarre.
