Er spielte Bluegrass in der Lonesome River Band, hat aber auch klassische Klarinette studiert und komponiert. Er hat ein Mandolinenkonzert und zwei Quintette f\u00fcr Mandoline und Streichquartett komponiert. In seinem Mandolinenkonzert verarbeitet Jeff Midkiff Motife und Melodien aus der Bluegrass Musik, aber auch Einfl\u00fcsse aus der sinfonischen Musik. Das Mandolinenkonzert wurde 2011 uraufgef\u00fchrt und wurde seither mehrfach in den USA aufgef\u00fchrt, zuletzt auch im Sommer 2023 mit dem Boston Symphony
